Your first visit to an acupuncture session can be an anxiety producing experience. Since most people are not familiar with Chinese Medicine they tend to be skeptical and apprehensive.  We take all that in to account when you arrive and will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable and relaxed so your experience is a positive one.

Upon arrival you will be asked to complete a short series of paperwork to begin the process. It is a good idea to arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of your appointment time to complete this paperwork.  This process provides a starting point for the practitioner to begin learning about you and your needs.  Each person is considered unique and it is imperative we understand how we can best serve you.

Once the paperwork is completed the practitioner will take you to a private room and begin the interview process. The more details you can provide the better the outcome will be.  Chinese Medicine is based on the premise that you are a whole person; body, mind and spirit.  By balancing these three areas to compliment one another we can help you feel better.

The practitioner will ask various questions. Some may make no sense at all but it is a part of the overall process and will help the practitioner determine where to place the needles.  Each needle placement creates a specific response in the body, so each session is tailored to the person, and that particular session.

All needles are pre-sterilized, single use needles, and are thrown away after each use. A typical treatment will consist of 10-25 needles, depending on the condition being treated.  The practitioner will insert each needle to the depth indicated for that particular point.  Most people say they experience not feeling the insertion of the needle to a slight pinch.  If for some reason a needle is uncomfortable it can be adjusted or removed. It is important to openly communicate with your practitioner.

The needles are retained in the body for approximately 20 minutes, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.  The lights are dimmed and soft music is played unless you request no music.

At the completion of the session, the needles are removed and we wait for the acupuncture to take effect. Some people notice an immediate result, but on average most notice a change within 24 hours.  After the initial session, typically you will notice a change, this change however may only last for 24-48 hours.  Acupuncture tends to build on its self resulting in a balanced body, requiring periodic tune ups.

We encourage you to give acupuncture 4-6 treatments before determining the efficacy of the treatments.  It is possible you may require fewer than 4-6, and it is possible you may require more.  There are several variables in determining the number of treatments.  Type of condition, how long has it been present? Is is chronic or acute? How your body responds to the treatment.  Our goal is always to treat the condition as quickly as possible and get you back to living your best life.
